They aren't going to take Drew off of ECMO today. He was having too much trouble getting rid of the carbon dioxide and his surgeon didn't like having his lung(s) working so hard by turning up the vent respirations. So they turned those back down and turned the ECMO lung back on. :( All in all, not a very good thing, IMO.
The surgeon spoke to a nephrologist (kidney specialist) and they are going to try givng him some different protiens in an attempt to pull some of the carbon dioxide out of his tissue.
Tomorrow is day 14 on ECMO. At the beginning, we were told that two weeks was basically the maximum amount of time they leave kids on ECMO. I don't think an extra day or two will make a huge difference but it's still scary.
